Adverse Weather Diving Tips

Following the tips below will increase your safety in adverse weather driving.
Snowstorm

  • Remember that large trucks have as much or as little control as you do in adverse conditions.

  • In adverse weather always slow down and leave more room between yourself and other traffic.

  • Make all vehicle maneuvers as smooth as possible. Do not brake, accelerate or turn quickly.

  • Be aware that bridges and overpasses freeze before any other part of the road.

  • When in heavy snow and/or slushy conditions, stay in your lane. Driving on the slush build-up between lanes can throw your vehicle out of control.

  • Do not follow too closely, or drive beside large trucks in adverse conditions. Snow and slush build up on or under the truck can break loose and cause a hazard to you.

  • When there is a chance of freezing rain, watch the water droplets on your outside mirror, if the droplets are freezing, then the road will be as well.

  • Keep windshield washer fluid topped up. In winter, use a de-icing washer fluid.

  • Keep an emergency kit in your car at all times. IE;

    • Windshield washer fluid
    • Banket
    • Small shovel
    • Ice scraper
    • Book of matches
    • First-aid kit
