Highway Diving Tips

Following the tips below will increase your safety on the highways.
Highway Overpasses

  • Leave lots of room, trucks require more room to maneuver than cars.

  • Overtake trucks quickly, maintaining a position beside large trucks is not a safe habit, because;

    1. Trucks have large blind spots, the driver might not be able to see you.
    2. In an emergency, the driver may need to swerve into your lane to avoid a vehicle or debris on the road.
    3. Truck tires can explode if not cared for properly, the more time you spend beside large trucks - the greater the risk.

  • When merging, pull in behind trucks and then overtake in left lane.

  • When driving in right lane, speed up or slow down to allow merging trucks in.

  • When traveling in the left hand lane, do not overtake a truck, then reduce speed to get off at your exit.

  • Drive at a constant speed, don't slow down and speed up on grades.

  • When a truck is overtaking you don't speed up to stay ahead of the truck.

  • Do not tailgate trucks, not only can the driver not see you behind him but you are susceptable to debris being thrown up by the trucks tires.

  • At night, do not drive with your headlights on high beam near other vehicles.

  • When merging for construction or "on ramps", alow large trucks plenty of room to merge.

  • If a truck has a signal on to change lanes, either move over a lane or slow down to make room.

  • When passing on multi lane highways, do not pull into the trucks lane until well ahead of the truck.

  • Do not slow down quickly when in front of a truck .

  • In slow moving traffic do not pass on right hand shoulder.

  • Trucks are slow gaining speed so have patience when following.

  • Do not play head games with truck drivers ,as it can become very frustrating for both drivers.

  • On tight turns or ramps a truck will slow down as they are top heavy. Do not try to overtake them at this time.

  • If a truck in front of you blows a tire, slow down and leave him room to pull off to the right side of the road.
